Not just An Angel

In January I was lucky to work with performance artist Laura Christina Brøvig Vallenes and her company LoopLoopLoop. “Not Just An Angel” was performed in Kristiansand Cathedral in occation the 100 year aniversery of women´s right to vote. In one week 1000 15 year olds got to see the performance. The performance was inspired by “Amtmandens Døtre” by Camilla Collett a writer and promoter of womens rights, with local ties. The Cathedral is a very loaded space to perform, and when doing this kind of site-spesific work it is important both to respect that, and to challenge it. The performance utilized elements like soil and flour as metaphorical elements inspired by the book, something that was a strong visual image. For some, too strong?

Enter the Dark Rainbow

After “Papercut Project -Theatricality in Photo” Krauss/Fugli wanted to embark on a new photo art project. For this one we wanted more freedom, more darkness, more uncensored moments, less logic, and wilder materials and visuals. Luckily our muse Jenna Sedmak was back from her travels, and was a champion modelling in one of the coldest winter days Kristiansand has lived through. We rented the project space from Agder Kunstnersenter, a space that had been a jeweller shop in the first floor, and an apartment seemingly untouched since the 50s on the second floor. We had no power for lights, heat or anything, we did the project in two ice cold days, with the clock ticking for daylight, and working hard on just keeping warm. The location was awesome, and just weeks after finishing the project the house was rented to an interior decorating shop and now it looks completely different. Here is the pictures, we are still in process with this “Enter the Dark Rainbow” project, not really finished, not really edited, not sure where to go with these yet. Papercut officially end

In 2011 photographer Ben Krauss and I did a crazy project called Papercut project, an investigation between theatricality and photo. The project got a life of it´s own, and has been in exhibit until a couple of weeks ago. We are super happy with how it all turned out, from expecting this project to be our own geeky side-project, to massive interest, attention and sales! We have been planning new projects and this winter we stunted another project, which I will write a separate post about. I would like to post the pictures from papercut here on this blog to mark the end of a fantastic journey.

“The forbidden science monologues”

I have had the amazing opportunity to direct the play “The Forbidden Science Monologues” in collaboration with the wonderful actress/director/teacher and one of the founders of Syrian Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts; Naila Al Atrash. She has been a guest teacher at the University of Agder this year through Scholars at Risk, a program promoting academic freedom and defender of human rights.

The performance consists of two monologues based on interviews with other scholars at risk, interweaving between the philosophy professor Kanuté from Kongo and the Iranian scientist Zahar. ( “A higher power”, Manoushka Zeegelaar Breveld, “A man of learning learns every day”, Guus Pengel) Their stories depict the life of academics that are for some reason considered a threat to their governments though their work. The characters experiences are not unfamiliar to Naila Al Atrash, who has fought for human rights, advocate women´s rights, and through her theatre work challenges the patriarchal system. The monologues delivered from the one of the foremost theatre directors in Syria and the Arabic world, tells a third story, her story. A story that gives the audience a glimpse from the inside of life within in a regime, how freedom is not something to be taken for granted, and how hope remains.

The performance will tour Norway in the end of May at Universitetet i Stavanger 23.04 Bergen Offentlige Bibliotek 21.05, Chateau Neuf, Lille sal 27.05, Universitetet i Tromsø 6. 06

The photographer Ben Krauss has taken some great pictures of our theatre piece “Utsikt fra en stige -eller 234 m”. (animation Monika Lyko)We have now played at the national OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) congress in Røros, at SSHF (The hospital), at University in Agder, and in about two weeks time we are playing for the students studying mental health at the health and sports faculty at UiA. We are also holding a workshop in relation to the showing, about how to use the theatre as a tool to approach mental health related issues. We are looking forward to keep on playing this piece, it has been very well received both from people working within the health sector, and theatre audiences.

I just had my 15 seconds of fame (closer to 3 seconds) on national television! In an episode of the science program Schrødinger’s katt, they were investigating effects of a cashless society….I’m awaiting the nomination for an Oscar…:) watch it from 7:42 Shrodingers katt , great fun.

New Projects on the Horizon!!

Time to update; “1:134″ is the title of the new piece I’m working on in collaboration with Marit Wergeland-Yates. The idea for the piece started over a year ago, and is now taking shape through research, applications for funding, and conversations with artists in other fields. The theme of the piece is the struggle concerning OCD -obsessive compulsive behaviour. Through use of animation, music, mask -play, text and performance we want to portrait the world of a character with the diagnosis as well as the journey towards the point where healing is possible. Our interest in the theme has many levels; from a physical theatre point of view, the traits of the diagnosis allows for rituals, repetitions of actions and gesture, and “magical thinking”, and on a personal level this is something that is recognizable to most people, someway or another. We want to explore the boundaries of what is considered “normal”, and when does actions become “abnormal” according to what standards. This piece will open this summer, and will play at the 10 year anniversary of the national OCD organization -Ananke in Røros in August. We have also been receiving funding for our project from Ananke, as well as Cultiva Express. I will keep this blog updated with the development of the process.
